Transmission Department Manager

Hybrid Role

(Upper Midwest Region)

ABOUT THE ROLE

Our client is seeking a Transmission Department Manager to provide strategic leadership and managerial direction for interns, designers, and engineers (Levels 8, 9 & 10) within the Transmission Department of the T&D Global Practice in the Upper Midwest Region. In addition to standard transmission design engineering duties, this role is responsible for advocating for safety, fostering a culture rooted in MacCulture principles, quality, diversity, inclusion, and team camaraderie. The manager will play a key role in recruiting, developing, training, and retaining engineering staff, coordinating team and mentor assignments, and conducting performance reviews and development meetings. This position also involves identifying and supporting training needs, collaborating with other departments on shared training, and assisting with client development and proposal reviews. The manager will drive business initiatives to improve profitability and efficiency, promote innovative practices, and ensure alignment with organizational goals. Additional responsibilities include promoting a healthy employee-owner culture, effective conflict resolution, ownership mentality, work-life balance, and community engagement. The ideal candidate will demonstrate creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in problem-solving and will interpret and communicate organizational policies, purposes, and goals to staff.


WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Provide managerial direction and leadership to interns, designers, and engineers within the Transmission Department, including oversight of Level 8, 9 & 10 engineers.
  • Advocate for and ensure safety standards are upheld within the department.
  • Actively foster a culture based on MacCulture principles, quality, diversity, inclusion, team cohesion, and camaraderie.
  • Recruit, develop, train, and retain engineering staff and interns, including supporting and developing training programs and collaborating with other departments on shared training initiatives.
  • Demonstrate creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in anticipating and solving problems.
  • Coordinate team and mentor assignments in collaboration with department management, project managers, and project engineers to ensure efficient and cost-effective staff utilization.
  • Conduct employee performance reviews, development meetings (including 90-day and annual appraisals, mid-year reviews, coaching sessions, and performance improvement plans), and provide regular feedback.
  • Identify training needs for engineers and support the development and implementation of training programs.
  • Assist with developing new clients, maintaining existing client relationships, and supporting proposal development and review.
  • Promote and administer effective conflict resolution, ownership mentality, a healthy work-life balance, and community engagement to foster a vibrant employee-owner culture.
  • Assist the Transmission Department Management team in developing and implementing business initiatives to improve profitability and/or efficiencies.
  • Develop and foster an innovative culture that challenges the norm and leverages tools, technology, and processes to drive continuous improvement and efficiency.
  • Provide input into areas of concern and direction to enhance the achievement of productivity goals, budgets, and quality; interpret and communicate organizational policies, purposes, and goals to staff.
  • Approve timecards and ensure billable time goals are met.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Transmission department management and senior management.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, environmental science, construction management, or a related field from an accredited program.
  • Minimum 5 years of related professional experience.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.
  • Experience giving and receiving performance feedback and conducting performance reviews.
  • Familiarity with tools and technology such as Pivot Tables, Data Models, Office 365 apps, and other efficiency/data tracking tools.
  • Ability to influence, lead, and manage change thoughtfully and positively.
  • Professional Engineering license (preferred).
  • Demonstrated high performance in previous roles, with a history of success as documented in performance management systems.
  • Experience with recruiting; Burns & McDonnell recruiting experience preferred.
