Job Description:

Senior API Engineer

Charlotte, NC (Hybrid – 3 days onsite / 2 days remote)

Onsite/Hybrid

Compensation: $68/hour

ABOUT THE ROLE

Join a high-impact API Platform team within a leading financial services organization in Charlotte, NC. As a Senior API Engineer, you will take end-to-end ownership of mission-critical APIs that power consumer-facing money movement and account services, supporting tens of billions of transactions annually. This role offers the opportunity to lead greenfield API development, modernize core payment and transfer capabilities, and collaborate with product, platform, and engineering teams to design scalable, resilient, and observable systems in a modern, cloud-native AWS environment. You will play a key role in architectural decisions, system design, and the ongoing evolution of high-volume, transactional platforms. This position is ideal for a senior engineer who thrives in a collaborative environment, can independently drive large bodies of work, and is passionate about building robust, production-grade systems at scale.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Design, develop, and own RESTful APIs supporting high-scale, transactional financial services
  • Lead greenfield API development while modernizing and enhancing existing platforms
  • Apply a system-level and application-architecture mindset to design, scalability, and reliability
  • Build and deploy serverless, event-driven solutions on AWS (Lambda, S3, DynamoDB, SQS, ECS, CloudWatch)
  • Integrate and manage API gateways (Kong preferred; Apigee a plus)
  • Participate in and influence architecture discussions, design reviews, and technical decision-making
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and triage production issues using modern observability and monitoring tools
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, platform teams, and full-stack engineers
  • Support and modernize legacy services (Java/Spring, Apache Camel, limited SOAP integrations)
  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, deployment strategies (blue/green, multi-region), and infrastructure automation

WHAT YOU BRING

  • 6+ years of experience building backend or API-driven applications
  • Strong experience designing and building APIs from scratch in high-volume, transactional environments
  • Proficiency with TypeScript and Node.js; familiarity with Python and Java/Spring for legacy support
  • Hands-on experience with AWS in serverless and event-driven architectures
  • Proven experience owning production systems, including monitoring, troubleshooting, and incident response
  • Strong understanding of RESTful API design and distributed system patterns
  • Ability to work autonomously and take ownership of large bodies of work
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills in cross-functional environments
  • Experience with financial services, payments, or money-movement platforms (preferred)
  • Experience with API management platforms such as Kong or Apigee (preferred)
  • Infrastructure as Code experience (Terraform) (preferred)
  • Experience with multi-region deployments and blue/green release strategies (preferred)
  • Familiarity with Apache Camel, SOAP integrations, or hybrid REST/SOAP environments (preferred)
  • AWS Certification (Solutions Architect – Associate or higher) (preferred)

WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU

  • Opportunity to work on high-impact, consumer-facing systems used daily by millions
  • Be part of a team supporting massive scale—tens of billions of transactions annually
  • Significant greenfield development alongside modernization of legacy platforms
  • Modern AWS, serverless, and event-driven architecture
  • Strong ownership, autonomy, and technical influence for senior engineers
  • Collaborative, cross-functional engineering environment
