Montgomery, AL

Hybrid role

$28 - $30 per hour


ABOUT THE ROLE

Our client is seeking a Controls Technician I in Montgomery, AL, to join their team responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing protection and control systems used in power substations. This entry-level role is ideal for candidates with 0-3 years of related experience who possess a strong understanding of electrical engineering principles and solid computer skills. The Controls Technician I will work with microprocessor relays, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), sensors, pumps, and motors, ensuring the reliable operation of critical substation equipment. The position requires hands-on troubleshooting, calibration, and documentation, as well as collaboration with project leads and participation in process hazard analyses. Staying current with industry trends and best practices is essential for success in this role.


WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot protection and control relaying and associated devices in power substations
  • Perform calibration of various types of protection and control relays and devices to ensure optimal performance
  • Assist in creating and maintaining accurate protection and control documentation
  • Support assigned project leads with field assignments and on-site tasks
  • Install, program, and maintain protection and control relays and devices, including microprocessor relays, PLCs, sensors, pumps, and motors
  • Participate in process hazard analyses to support safety and compliance initiatives
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current industry trends, standards, and best practices
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics for system installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance
  • Utilize Microsoft Office applications for documentation, reporting, and communication
  • Work with PLCs, HMIs, and both AC and DC systems as required by project needs

WHAT YOU BRING

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree in electrical engineering, industrial maintenance, or a related field preferred
  • 0-3 years of experience in a controls technician or similar role, preferably in a power substation or industrial environment
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical documentation
  • Working knowledge of PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) and HMIs (Human-Machine Interfaces)
  • Experience with both AC and DC electrical systems
  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering principles and troubleshooting techniques
  • Ability to install, maintain, and troubleshoot protection and control relaying and associated devices
  • Solid computer skills and attention to detail in documentation
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
