Location: Remote, working EST timezone
Start Date: ASAP
Duration: 6-month Contract to Hire
ABOUT THE ROLE
Our client is seeking a Sr. DevOps Engineer for a remote, 6-month contract-to-hire position. In this role, you will architect, build, and operate scalable, cost-efficient AWS cloud infrastructure, with a focus on serverless and containerized services such as Lambda, Fargate, ECS, and Docker. You will be responsible for automating infrastructure using Terraform and AWS tools, developing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, and engineering secure research enclaves and data-lake interfaces with robust compliance to HIPAA and NIST SP 800-171 standards. The Sr. DevOps Engineer will champion security-first operations, enforce IAM best practices, and collaborate with clinicians, bioinformaticians, and data scientists to productionize ML and AI workflows that advance pediatric care. This role requires technical leadership, mentoring of junior engineers, and a passion for continuous learning, operational excellence, and cross-functional collaboration.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Architect, build, and operate scalable AWS cloud infrastructure with serverless and containerized services (Lambda, Fargate, ECS, Docker)
- Design and implement reusable Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform, CloudFormation, SAM, or AWS CDK
- Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines (CodePipeline, GitHub Actions) with automated testing and streamlined account provisioning
- Engineer secure research enclaves and data-lake interfaces with least-privilege, role-based access controls and user-friendly GUIs
- Ensure compliance with cloud security best practices, HIPAA, and NIST SP 800-171 standards; develop standardized templates and guardrails to enforce policy and reliability
- Enforce security-first operations including IAM best practices, encryption by default, automated backups, and disaster-recovery drills
- Collaborate with clinicians, bioinformaticians, and data scientists to productionize ML and AI workflows that advance pediatric care
- Provide technical leadership, share DevOps best practices, and mentor junior engineers to elevate team capabilities
- Monitor cloud usage and recommend optimizations to reduce spend without compromising performance
- Promote a culture of operational excellence, continuous learning, and knowledge sharing within the team
WHAT YOU BRING
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
- 8+ years of professional DevOps experience with AWS, Docker, Git, and Linux
- Proven expertise in AWS architecture and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, SAM, AWS CDK)
- Proficiency in scripting and software development using Python and Bash (or similar languages)
- Strong understanding of CI/CD pipelines, observability tools, and security automation
- Experience with container orchestration and cloud-native patterns (Lambda, Fargate, ECS, Docker)
- Familiarity with Git-based workflows and version control best practices
- Experience working in regulated or security-conscious environments (healthcare or government) is a plus
- Excellent problem-solving skills and a pragmatic approach to technical challenges
- Strong communication skills—able to explain complex systems to technical and non-technical audiences
- Collaborative mindset with ability to partner across cross-functional teams, including clinicians and data scientists
- Passion for continuous learning, knowledge sharing, and mentoring junior engineers
- Experience championing cloud security best practices, compliance (HIPAA, NIST SP 800-171), and reliability
- Nice-to-have: AWS certifications (Solutions Architect Associate/Professional, DevOps Engineer)
- Nice-to-have: Exposure to big-data tools and services (Spark, Athena, Glue, S3-based data lakes)
- Nice-to-have: Experience with frontend development or internal tools (React or similar frameworks)
- Nice-to-have: Familiarity with additional compliance standards such as FedRAMP
