ABOUT THE ROLE

Our client, a leading insurance organization, is seeking a detail-oriented and analytical General Accounting Analyst for a long-term contract opportunity in Chesterfield, MO or Birmingham, AL. As a key member of the Accounting team, you will be responsible for researching, analyzing, and resolving outstanding accounting items impacting balance sheet reconciliations and financial reporting. This role requires a quick learner with strong critical thinking skills who enjoys investigating complex issues, identifying root causes, and collaborating across teams to drive resolution. You will play a vital role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial data, supporting audit requirements, and identifying opportunities for process improvement in a dynamic environment.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

• Research and resolve outstanding reconciling items impacting balance sheet accounts.
• Investigate accounting discrepancies, unusual transactions, and aged items to determine root causes and implement corrective actions.
• Analyze financial data and supporting documentation to identify trends, issues, and opportunities for process improvement.
• Collaborate with accounting, finance, operational, and business teams to obtain information and facilitate issue resolution.
• Track, manage, and monitor remediation efforts for unresolved accounting items.
• Prepare and maintain documentation supporting issue resolution and audit requirements.
• Identify and recommend opportunities to improve accounting processes, controls, and overall efficiency.
• Support audit requests and internal control activities as needed.
• Utilize advanced Excel skills and accounting systems (such as SAP) to analyze large datasets and perform reconciliations.

WHAT YOU BRING

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting.
• 2+ years of accounting, financial analysis, or related experience.
• Strong understanding of general ledger accounting and balance sheet reconciliations.
• Experience researching and resolving accounting issues or discrepancies.
• Strong critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to independently investigate issues and determine appropriate solutions.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
• Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new systems, processes, and accounting concepts.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience with SAP (nice to have).
• Experience analyzing large datasets (nice to have).
• Experience supporting audit requests or internal control activities (nice to have).
• Insurance, financial services, banking, or public accounting experience (nice to have).
• Experience with account reconciliation software or automated reconciliation tools (nice to have).
• CPA designation or CPA-track candidate (nice to have).
