ABOUT THE ROLE

Our client is seeking a Civil Design Engineer III to support the Brunswick Nuclear Plant in Southport, NC. This hybrid role, operating on a 4x10 schedule, involves performing engineering work for civil and structural projects within the plant’s design engineering organization. The selected candidate will collaborate with operations, maintenance, and other engineering disciplines to ensure the safe and efficient operation of nuclear facilities. You will be required to qualify in the necessary duty areas to act independently as a Responsible Engineer for Duke Energy, with past qualifications and engineering product development at other utilities as an acceptable alternative. Prior to working independently, you must obtain qualifications for a Modification Engineer and Design Verification Engineer. The role includes acting as a Lead Technical and/or Responsible Engineer for assigned projects, or supporting projects led by other engineering disciplines. You will provide field engineering support during implementation, develop change package revisions, complete post-modification testing activities, and facilitate turnover of design products to the Operations department. Implementation activities follow a site schedule and may occasionally require support during off-normal hours. All work will be reviewed and verified by a qualified engineer and approved by Duke management.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Develop scope, design inputs, technical evaluations, installation instructions, and testing requirements for engineering design change packages (e.g., piping systems, pipe supports, equipment/component mounting, weak link evaluations, seismic qualifications, foundation design).
  • Research engineering and design issues, evaluate alternative solutions, and provide recommended options to project teams for implementation.
  • Provide ongoing support for assigned engineering design changes, including work order reviews, corrective action program assignments, and field installation support activities.
  • Develop or revise design specifications, technical requirement documents, and complex engineering calculations impacted by design changes.
  • Develop safety screens and evaluations that support engineering design changes.
  • Revise site design basis documents, design drawings, and regulatory documents affected by engineering design changes.
  • Act as Lead Technical and/or Responsible Engineer for assigned projects and/or support projects led by other engineering disciplines.
  • Provide field engineering support during implementation, including post-modification testing and facilitating turnover of design products to Operations.
  • Exhibit sound technical judgment and provide guidance to project teams.
  • Obtain and maintain necessary qualifications (Responsible Engineer, Modification Engineer, Design Verification Engineer) and comply with site access and safety requirements (General Employee Training, Radiation Worker Training, Security Clearance, Fitness for Duty).
  • Ensure all work is reviewed and verified by a qualified engineer and approved by Duke management.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or equivalent with relevant experience.
  • 10+ years of engineering experience in the nuclear industry, including Civil/Structural Design Modification preparation.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain unescorted access to a nuclear facility (General Employee Training, Radiation Worker Training, Security Clearance, Fitness for Duty).
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in a professional environment.
  • Proficiency in researching engineering/design issues, evaluating alternatives, and making sound recommendations.
  • Experience with nuclear industry standard design processes.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Registration/Licensure as a Professional Engineer (preferred).
  • Civil/Structural Design engineering experience at Brunswick Nuclear Plant (preferred).
  • Experience with 10CFR50.59 regarding nuclear facility modifications (preferred).

WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU

  • Competitive hourly compensation
  • Hybrid work schedule (4x10, Monday–Thursday)
  • Per diem for qualified candidates
  • Opportunity to work on critical infrastructure projects in the nuclear industry
  • Collaborative and safety-focused work environment
