Job Description:

Senior Bioinformatics & Molecular Systems Consultant

Remote role

Compensation: $90 - $115 per hour

Contract: 6 months

Start Date: 10/05/2026

ABOUT THE ROLE

Our client is seeking a highly experienced Senior Bioinformatics & Molecular Systems Consultant for a 6-month contract to provide technical leadership, support, analysis, and optimization of critical laboratory informatics platforms supporting molecular diagnostics, cytogenetics, genomics, and clinical laboratory operations. In this senior-level consulting role, you will be responsible for supporting and troubleshooting a custom application ecosystem that facilitates data exchange between laboratory systems, bioinformatics workflows, clinical databases, and downstream reporting tools. The environment includes integrations between laboratory applications such as LabVantage/LabHammer, Archer Analysis software, internal laboratory systems, and custom-developed applications utilizing JSON-based architecture and file-based data repositories. You will be expected to quickly assess undocumented environments, analyze existing system architecture with limited documentation, identify dependencies, and assume ownership of ongoing support activities. This position requires expertise across bioinformatics, molecular diagnostics, laboratory informatics, systems integration, and healthcare IT.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Provide technical leadership and production support for custom laboratory informatics applications, including LabVantage/LabHammer, Archer Analysis software, and custom-developed solutions.
  • Analyze existing application architecture, data flows, and system integrations with minimal documentation, identifying dependencies and areas for optimization.
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve application, interface, and data integrity issues across laboratory systems, including root cause analysis for complex incidents.
  • Support and optimize bioinformatics workflows for molecular diagnostics, genomics, cytogenetics, Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), and precision medicine programs.
  • Validate and ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of data movement between sequencing platforms, analysis tools, laboratory information systems, and reporting applications.
  • Support integrations and data exchange mechanisms, including JSON-based data structures, API-based integrations, file-based imports/exports, HL7 messaging, and laboratory result interfaces.
  • Analyze and support database architecture, file-based repositories, and data management environments; assist with database optimization, troubleshooting, and data validation.
  • Develop technical documentation, system support procedures, and operational improvement recommendations.
  • Identify operational risks and recommend remediation strategies to ensure system reliability and data integrity.
  • Collaborate with laboratory leadership, molecular pathologists, bioinformaticians, laboratory managers, and IT teams to support ongoing operations and enhancements.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Bachelor's degree in Bioinformatics, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Genomics, Computer Science, Biomedical Informatics, Information Systems, or a related scientific or technical field.
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in bioinformatics, molecular diagnostics, laboratory informatics, clinical laboratory systems, or healthcare IT.
  • 5+ years supporting complex laboratory applications and integrations, including custom-developed solutions in production environments.
  • Expertise in molecular diagnostics workflows, genomics, cytogenetics, NGS, variant analysis, and bioinformatics data pipelines.
  • Proficiency with JSON-based data structures, API integration, data mapping and transformation, file-based data exchange, and data validation/reconciliation.
  • Strong production application support, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, incident management, and technical documentation skills.
  • Experience supporting laboratory databases, including SQL query development, data extraction, validation, and database troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and support undocumented or custom application environments, quickly identifying dependencies and support needs.
  • Experience supporting Archer Analysis software and laboratory information systems (LIS) preferred.
  • Familiarity with HL7, FHIR, or healthcare interoperability standards preferred.
  • Experience supporting molecular pathology, cytogenetics laboratories, and genomic reporting platforms is a plus.
  • Experience with cloud-based laboratory platforms is desirable.
  • Excellent technical documentation and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with laboratory leadership, pathologists, bioinformaticians, and IT teams.
